In conjunction with its partners , CENLED offers 15 short learning programmes (SLPs) aas part of it’s continuos professional development programme.  
The UWC offers the B. Econ. (LED) Degree.
The UNiversity of Kwazulu Natal offers a post-graduate diploma in LED, and UJ is developing a professional Masters Degree in LED.
The purpose is to develop the overall competence of aspiring and experienced Local Economic Development (LED) practitioners. CENLED’s short learning programmes are practical and interactive, and integrate theory and real world practice.

Who should complete these programmes?
Experienced and aspiring Local Economic Development (LED) practitioners who want to professionalise their careers.

The target audience includes:

  • LED managers in local, district and metropolitan municipalities;
  • senior staff in LED units in municipalities;
  • LED experts in national and provincial public sector departments and entities, including provincial governments, municipal entities, the Department of Cooperative Governance CoGTA and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA); and
  • people involved in LED-related projects in diverse organisations, such as business associations and chambers, entrepreneurs and Corporate Social Investment (CSI) practitioners.

The following short learning programmes (SLPs) are offered by our partners: 

B.Econ Degree

The BEcon Degree (4years) is the first of its kind in the country. The full-time programme is aimed at people who would want to take up employment in those professions where critical perspectives on issues of economic transformation are crucial. Enrol to become a certified LED Practitioner.

Entry requirements

  1. Grade 12 with university exemption;
  2. Maths on 4 (50% to 59%);
  3. English on 4;
  4. Another language 4;
  5. Total score: 30

LED Short Learning Programmes

The purpose of the short learning program is to understand the background, philosophy and the principles underlying LED.

Entry requirements

  • National Senior Certificate obtained in 2008 or after;
  • Senior Certificate obtained prior to 2008, with work/academic experience in the fields related to public administration, economics or business.
  • Applicants will be subject to an internal selection process by interview.
